NEW ORLEANS – Crews raced to protect the Gulf of Mexico coastline Monday as a remote sub tried to shut off an underwater oil well that's gushing 42,000 gallons a day from the site of a wrecked drilling platform.
If crews cannot stop the leak quickly, they might need to drill another well to redirect the oil, a laborious process that could take about two months while oil washes up along a broad stretch of shore, from the white-sand be

March 22, 2010 marks World Water Day, a 24-hour observance held annually since 1993 to draw attention to the role that freshwater plays in the world. In recent years it has focused global concern on the dwindling supply of clean
water.

By Steve Kellman
Circle of Blue
A new analysis from the Pacific Institute finds that climate change and its effect on freshwater supplies may lead to more cross-border conflicts over shared water resources if countries don’t start preparing now.
The analysis, conducted by the California-based research institute and the United Nations Environme…

The two leaders discussed river sharing and hydroelectric power plants during their January 11 meeting.
No agreement on sharing the Teesta River was signed when Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met today with her counterpart Manmohan Singh, but Hasina continued to push for a deal similar to the Ganges Treaty, according to Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper.

Information on the disaster in Haiti is only slowly coming out, but it is clear that the magnitude and extent of the catastrophe is vast, in a land seemingly cursed by endless environmental destruction.
I urge people to make donations to whatever organizations they trust to deliver help. I’ve donated to the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, but there are many more.

Regional water plan could serve as a model for other communities.
by Steve Kellman
Circle of Blue
Chicagoland planners have drafted an ambitious plan to secure the region’s water supply through 2050, in the face of a booming population and its increased demand on the finite resource.
The draft plan — the first of its kind for the region — covers 11 counties that are home to 8.4 million people, a population expected to grow to 12.1 million by 2050.
“We live in a region that’s been blessed with…

Water weaves through history, giving rise to conflict, collapses and creation in civilizations. In his latest book, WATER: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization, economic journalist Steven Solomon examines the economic and social relationship between people and water– tying the precious resource’s history to its unstable present. Circle of Blue caught up with Solomon to discuss the book’s central themes, especially what we can learn today from water’s role in our past.

As we approach the January 2011 date for the referendum on the south, and as we see Darfur seemingly in an eerily, but uncertain, peaceful period, we need to look at the water situation in Sudan. Water will be a make or break issue for the peace process in Sudan and in deciding whether the Sudan will move forward in peace and prosperity or more poverty and war. It is a country that went through one of the most brutal civil wars in history. Millions were killed and displaced. Sudan is the country…
